~ LST AND LANDING CRAFT ASSOCIATION (ROYAL NAVY) ~

1987 to 2011

It is very sad to record the demise of the UK's LST and Landing Craft Association. For nearly a quarter of a century they provided information and support services to veterans of the Royal Navy who had the distinction of serving their country on the landing craft and ships of Combined Operations. After their final reunion at Hayling Island, Portsmouth, in September 2011 the Association at national level will cease to exist.

At local level where there are sufficient veteran members to justify such arrangements, branch meetings will continue to be held and liaison with other areas will be sustained where there is a need or demand. Such arrangements are likely to continue until the end of 2012. During this period the Association's three monthly newsletter, ‘Kedge Hook’, which has been produced since the Association was founded by the late W J ‘Bill’ Chalk back in 1987, will hopefully continue to be published.

Although the Association itself will cease to exist, their Archivist/Historian, Tony Chapman, will remain in place while the ‘Kedge Hook’ continues in publication, feeding enquiries he receives to the 'editorial staff' of the newsletter as well as assisting directly anyone who might approach him concerning landing craft and ships.

Tony Chapman's knowledge of landing craft and ships is, in itself, extensive but he also enjoys the willing assistance of other knowledgeable enthusiasts when particular enquiries prove problematic. He has contributed numerous pages to this website which can be found amongst this list of landing craft web pages... but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Over about 7 years he has enthusiastically provided definitive answers and advice to countless questions about landing craft received in the mail bag of this Combined Operations website. I'm delighted to know that his association with the website will continue indefinitely and that his extensive knowledge will be available for many years to come.

Anyone seeking information or advice on any aspect of landing craft and their operations can contact Tony at the link opposite or through the website Contact Us page.

Memorial to Bill Millin - "The Mad Piper". A memorial to Bill Millin will be erected in 2013. Against orders he piped Lord Lovat and his Commandos off their landing craft and onto Sword beach and in doing so became an iconic figure in the history of WW2. Please help to complete the memorial with a donation of any size.
