Subject Brief Details of Page Content
Combined Ops Memorial Information about the memorial including its location in the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. It will embrace all from the many Allied nations who served in Combined Operations or were trained by them in the art of amphibious warfare.
Walcheren (Infatuate) Operation Infatuate, the codename for the invasion of the Dutch Island of Walcheren, was a major Combined Operation amphibious landing against heavily fortified and entrenched German positions. The island stood at the mouth of the River Scheldt and blocked Allied access to the captured port of Antwerp some 80 kilometres inland. With the Germans holding the channel ports it is impossible to overstate the importance of Antwerp to the Allies in order to secure supply lines to their advancing armies.
Occupation of Walcheren Jan Wigard was just 6 years old when the Germans arrived in his home town of Middelberg on the Island of Walcheren in May of 1940. It would be over 4 years before the island was liberated.
